Commemorating 80 Years Since Victory in Europe

What is VE Day?
On 8 May 1945, the world rejoiced as Victory in Europe (VE) Day was officially declared. At 3 PM, Prime Minister Winston Churchill made his famous broadcast to the nation:
"Yesterday morning, at 2.41, at General Eisenhower’s Headquarters, General Jodl, representative of the German High Command and of Grand Admiral Doenitz, designated head of the German State, signed an act of unconditional surrender of all German land, sea, and air forces in Europe to the Allied Expeditionary Forces and simultaneously to the Soviet High Command... Hostilities will end officially at one minute after midnight to-night, Tuesday, May 8. But in the interests of saving lives the ‘Cease Fire’ began yesterday, to be sounded all along the front, and our dear Channel Islands are also to be freed to-day."
The streets of Britain were filled with joy, relief, and celebration. British Mosquitos performed victory rolls over Buckingham Palace, thousands of people gathered at Piccadilly Circus, and service members from across the Commonwealth and liberated nations joined in the jubilant celebrations.
