Meet the Regiment: Who Were the Gloucestershire Soldiers?

The Gloucestershire Regiment, also known as “The Glosters,” was made up of local men who served in the British Army from the late 1600s to the late 1900s. Over the centuries, they travelled around the world and fought in some of the most important battles in history. At the Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum, you’ll get to:

  • Try on real Army uniforms
  • Peek into life in the trenches
  • Explore medals, weapons, and stories from over 300 years
  • Take part in fun activity trails and quizzes

The Napoleonic Wars: Back-to-Back Bravery!

Did you know that the Glosters are famous for fighting back to back in the middle of a chaotic battlefield? At the Battle of Alexandria in 1801, soldiers from the 28th Regiment of Foot (later part of the Gloucestershire Regiment) were surrounded by enemy forces. Some were attacked from the front, others from behind. So what did they do? They turned around and fought in two directions at once! This incredible bravery earned them a very special honour: they’re the only regiment in the British Army allowed to wear a badge on the back of their cap as well as the front! You can see one of these famous back badges on display in the museum.

World War I: Life in the Trenches

Jump forward a hundred years and the world was at war again. During World War I (1914–1918), the Glosters were sent to fight in France, Belgium, and beyond. In the museum, you can:

  • View a replica First World War trench
  • See the uniforms and gear soldiers wore in muddy battlefields
  • Learn how soldiers communicated with messengers, pigeons, and even flags!

It was a tough life, and the exhibits show just how hard these brave soldiers worked to protect others.

World War II: From Dunkirk to Victory

The Glosters also fought during World War II (1939–1945) in Europe, North Africa, and Asia. You might have heard of the famous Dunkirk evacuation—a moment where thousands of British troops were rescued from the beaches of France. Some of those soldiers were from the Gloucestershire Regiment! In the museum, you’ll see the helmets, rucksacks, and kit they carried with them—and even try lifting a soldier’s pack. (Spoiler: it’s heavy!)There are also stories from local soldiers who took part in the D-Day landings and the battles that helped bring the war to an end.

The Korean War and the Battle of Imjin River

Here’s one for the real history fans: in 1951, during the Korean War, the Glosters were outnumbered by more than 15 to 1 at the Battle of Imjin River. But instead of giving up, they held their ground for three days!Their bravery impressed the whole world, and they became known as the “Glorious Glosters.”In the museum’s Imjin River exhibit, you’ll find:
